Once
the
name of your web site has been registered and reserved for your exclusive use,
it's called a Domain Name.
Once
your site is built it needs to be uploaded to a computer / server so that others
can see it. You can rent space on another company's computer. The
company that rents you the space for your site is called a "Host".
Meta
tags are hidden within your site's pages and contain information which search
engines can use to decide how to classify or index a particular page.
A
browser is the program which you use to surf the web. Examples are Internet
Explorer ("IE"), Netscape and Opera. AOL customers
are actually using two programs, the first is the usual screen that AOL costumers
see. This screen collects information and relays instructions to
your browser, typically IE.
Frames
display web pages within different windows of the main web site page. As
a consequence it becomes difficult for search engines to follow from
one page to the next in a frameset site. This means many of the pages
of a particular site may not get indexed or listed with a search engine.
Search
engines (Google, Yahoo) visit sites and create an index of the information
on each page. They use this information to create an index which web
surfers can search by typing in a phrase or keyword, e.g. "California real
estate".
Some sites have "splash" pages which is an introductory show or
promotional image. These pages load very slowly for someone on a dial-up
connection. Most folks don't have the time to watch an ad just so they can enter a site and find what they want. Often
these visitors simply go to another web site.
